Or, more to the point, Is a 'plate of spinach' approving or disapproving?

In other words approval and disapproval have nothing to do with it. I don't know how you got that idea.

Abject apology là gì

'abject apology' is just very humbly saying that you're sorry. Didn't you get that from the dictionary links?

CJ

AnonymousFor me, for example, the abject poverty is an extreme/horrible poverty whereas the abject apology isn't extreme or horrible (or is it?).
The links I gave show this:

abject: extremely bad or severe; very humble, feeling or showing shame; very weak, lacking courage or strength

apology: a statement saying that you are sorry about something; an expression of regret for having done or said something wrong

AnonymousThat is a very common problem for non-natives
Since no context was given, we just have to guess. That's another common problem. But it shouldn't be that difficult to put those two together. 'abject' means severe if applied to 'poverty'; it means either humble or weak if applied to 'apology'. Which is it? No context. We have to guess.

AnonymousThat is a very common problem for non-natives; you understand both words as they are explained in the dictionary but when they are put together into a noun phrase, they are somewhat confusing and fogging the meaning. For me, for example, the abject poverty is an extreme/horrible poverty whereas the abject apology isn't extreme or horrible (or is it?).
Yes but one of the dictionaries CHJ linked us to said this:

expressing or offered in a humble and often ingratiating spirit <abject flattery> <an abject apology>

That sems clear enough to me.
