My brows are the one thing I don't leave the house without touching, whether it's a little pencil definition, some pomade brushed through, or some casual brow tattooing. No, I don't mean microblading. The Tattoo Studio Brow Gel is a stain for your brows that, once set, is completely waterproof, smudge-proof, and sweatproof — for up to two days. You know what you could do with up to two days' worth of brows? According to Maybelline New York, quite a bit. The Tattoo Brow Gel (which won a 2018 Best of Beauty Breakthrough Award) is a bit like a hybrid of a brow marker and a stain. It's either a thick liquid or a thin gel — I can't decide — but that's the consistency of the stuff. (It doesn't drip, but it glides as if it would.) The gel stains the skin underneath your brows and, yes, it does simultaneously tint the brow hairs a bit by default since you're slathering it over your entire brow, but it mostly works by tinting the skin. And then once it's set...it's basically squatting for the next two days. The secret is a clever mix of the same film formers and polymers that give waterproof mascaras and hair gels their longevity, cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson told writer Victoria Kirby for our October 2018 Best of Beauty issue. And because the film formers are flexible, they seal in color without making brows stiff. The application is a bit tricky but really easy once you find your own method. The wand has a fuzzy doe-foot-like applicator that is great for filling in your brows, but you may need something a bit sharper to define the edges. An angled eyeliner brush does the trick just fine for that part (the product doesn't come with one so you have to provide your own). I'll swipe a small amount of the gel from the beginning of my brows toward the ends, and then pick up some product with my angled eyeliner brush to get my tails looking nice and sharp.
