Change drag point to top of 2d family năm 2024

When I reload a Revit family, a dialog presents the question, do you want to ‘Overwrite the exiting version’ or ‘Overwrite the exiting version and its parameter values’. What is the difference?

PostedNovember 24, 2022

UpdatedFebruary 8, 2024

Revit families contain 2D\3D geometry and have instance and type parameters to allow each user to create variations of the family as desired. When reloading a family, the “geometry” will always be updated, but you can choose if you want to update the “type parameters”.

Overwrite the existing version

This choice will update the family geometry AND any values entered in the families type properties. Think of it as “resetting” the types within the family. Instance parameters will remain the same for the families that are already placed in the project.

If you're having trouble making cross selections in Revit, where you're accidentally moving elements, here's the fix to help you avoid those issues!

Today we're going to look at how to turn on or off the drag select option in Revit.

So right now, we're looking at an elevation view in Revit, and you can see that when I hover over an object, it will let me select it, and if I do a drag selection with the object highlighted, it's going to move when I move my mouse.

Let me 'CTRL Z' to undo that, and the same will happen for any other element that will highlight in blue, and then I do a click and drag selection, that element will move as I move my mouse.

So again 'CTRL Z' to undo.

So if you're having trouble making cross selections in Revit, with moving objects that you don't want to be moving, all you need to do is go down to the lower right hand corner, and three icons in, you'll see an option for drag elements on selection.

Right now you can see that it's turned on because there's no X there, but once I click that icon, there will be an X that will appear, and that will show that it will disallow the movement of objects upon selection and dragging.

So now you can see, if I hover over an element, and I do a drag selection or a cross selection, it's not going to move. It will just select that object, which may or may not be what you want to have happen.

So if you're having trouble making selections in Revit, because you're accidentally moving things that you don't want to be moving, that's a really good option to check off, or turn off, to make it a little bit easier to make those cross selections.

Again, if you want to turn that back on, because there definitely are benefits to having that option checked on, all you have to do is re-click that icon, and then you can go ahead and move things around freely.

Again I'm going to 'CTRL Z' to undo that change.

When dragging most model elements, you can reposition the object anywhere you like. Holding down the shift key while dragging can constrain the element to move only in one direction, or to remove the constraint so you can freely place it.

Family Stretch Control

I am creating a family that has a rectangle with a length and height parameters.

Can you in Revit place a stretch(drag) control that you can change the length or height parameters like on a dynamic block?

You need to create reference planes and place dimensions to constrain them. Associate the dimensions with labels which are Instance parameters. Then draw the geometry and constrain them to the reference planes. When load it in project you will have the grips to drag.

Thanks for the response

I am very new to Revit

I created the geometry with dimensions constrained to labels.

This works fine.

What do mean by creating a reference plane?

Associate geometry directly with instance parameters also gives you the grips as long as the geometry are at least Weak Reference.

But I would recommend using reference planes as the skeleton to layout the dimensions before you create the geometry, especially for 3d complex geometry . One instance benefit is if you need to replace the old geometry with a new one you don't have to place all the dimensions again, simply lock the new geometry to the planes.

Adding on, if you need the drag handles to show up while working in a 3D view, then use reference lines, instead of reference planes. Just found that one out

Thanks for the responses.

I am trying to create an annotation family so I can place it directly on a sheet.

As far as I can find, I can not add a reference plane to an Annotation family.

What I am trying to accomplish is to add a remarks block to the bottom of my schedules.

Maybe there is a better way to approach this?

I am trying to do the same. Any resolution?

You can use reference planes, but you must place them before creating the extrusion or whatever geometry you choose. The drag handles show when creating reference planes (at least they do in the furniture family).

While it is a good practice to create ref planes first, it is not a must. You can always create the ref planes later and constrain the existing elements to them.

I am trying to make a parametric DOWN direction arrow for stairs that is a Generic Annotation Family (ie. Symbol) and would like to be able to drag the width and length of the symbol to fit my stairs. (The reason for creating this is, we always show DOWN as a convention and revit doesnt support this. The stair direction annotation is also not nice and we often use model in place stairs.) No matter what I do, I cannot get my symbol to show dragable arrows/handles. (family file and images attached)

How do I change the insertion point in Revit family?

Solution: Update the family so that the reference planes that define the family origin (this is set by the Defines Origin parameter) cross at the point you want the insertion point to be located.

How do you define the origin point of a family in Revit?

In a plan view, while pressing Ctrl , select both reference planes. Click Modify | Reference Planes tab Modify panel (Pin). With the reference planes still selected, on the Properties palette, select Defines Origin. The intersection of the reference planes now defines the origin/insertion point of the family.

How do you move objects vertically in Revit?

You can click and drag a selected element to a new location in the drawing area. If multiple elements are selected, they all move when you drag one. The spatial relationships among them are preserved. Use arrow keys on the keyboard to move selected elements vertically or horizontally.

How do you move families in Revit?

How to transfer a family from one file to another in Revit.

Solution:.

Copy / Paste. You can copy , and then paste loadable families, system families, and in-place families to transfer from one project to another..

Load Into Project. For loadable families, another option would be the following: ... .

Transfer Project Standards..
